In Australia, each daycare and early learning centre designs its own daily routines based on the educational approach it adopts. However, it is possible to describe a general routine that many centres commonly follow.

Most centres open at around 7:30 am.

  • 7:30–9:00 am: Free play

  • 9:00 am: Morning tea

  • 10:00 am: Group time, followed by planned learning activities

  • 11:00 am–12:00 pm: Free play

  • 12:00–1:00 pm: Lunch

  • 1:00–2:00 pm: Rest time

    • For younger age groups, this is usually nap time for children who need sleep.

    • For older children, this period may include quiet activities such as relaxation, meditation, reading books, and resting.

  • 2:30–3:00 pm: Afternoon tea

  • 3:30–4:30 pm: Free play

  • 5:00 pm: Late snack

  • 5:30–6:00 pm: Free play

In general, most centres close at 6:00 pm.
